What the free tier actually includes
The free tier is not a locked demo. You get the real app — plate scanning, fridge scanning, recipes, the macro day — with a cap on how many AI scans you can run per day. The cap exists because every scan is a real vision-model call with a real cost attached, not because the features are being held hostage.
That is deliberate. The whole pitch of this app is an accuracy claim, and an accuracy claim you cannot test before paying is worth nothing. Scan your own dinner, compare it to what you know is on the plate, and then decide.
Against the rest of the category
- Cal AI — $9.99/month or $39.99/year. Forky is about 40% cheaper monthly and the same annually. Full comparison.
- MyFitnessPal Premium — $19.99/month or $79.99/year, roughly twice Forky annually, but with a much larger food database and a genuinely generous free tier. Full comparison.
- Lose It! Premium — around $39.99/year, near enough identical to Forky on the year. Full comparison.
None of these differ enough on price for price to be the deciding factor. Decide on whether you want a database you type into or a camera you point, and whether you want the fridge side of the loop at all.
Pricing questions
Is there a genuinely free version?
Yes. The free tier gives you a daily quota of AI scans with no card and no countdown. It is not a 7-day timer dressed up as a free plan — it stays free. The cap is on how many scans per day, not on which features you can see.
How does the free trial work?
The monthly and yearly plans include Apple's 7-day introductory free trial. Payment starts only after the trial unless you cancel first, and you cancel in iOS Settings, not in the app. The weekly plan has no trial, and the lifetime purchase has no trial because it is a one-time payment rather than a subscription.
Where do I cancel?
iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Forky → Cancel. Every Forky subscription is sold through Apple, so Apple is the only place it can be cancelled and the only place refunds can be requested. There is no web payment and no card details held by Forky.
Why is the weekly plan proportionally so expensive?
Because it exists for people who genuinely want a short commitment, not as the recommended path. At $1.99 a week it costs about four times the yearly plan over a year. If you expect to still be tracking next month, the monthly or yearly plan is the honest choice.
Do prices change in my country?
Yes. The figures on this page are US App Store prices. Apple converts to your local storefront using its own pricing tiers, and the local amount includes local VAT where it applies, so the equivalent in EUR, CHF or GBP will not be a straight currency conversion. The App Store listing always shows your real price.
How does that compare to the other calorie apps?
Cal AI is $9.99/month or $39.99/year, so Forky is cheaper monthly and identical annually. MyFitnessPal Premium is $19.99/month or $79.99/year, roughly double Forky on the year. Lose It! Premium sits around $39.99/year, effectively the same as Forky. Price is not the deciding factor between these apps; what they actually do is.
